A trip to..."HEAVEN"..

The vicious sound of the alarm clock woke me up with a start. Two three huge yawns later I pushed myself out of the bed with very li'l effort caz I couldn't sleep all night. I looked into the bathroom mirror. A ghost with baggy eyes stared back at me. Scccaarry...No one, believe me no one could wake me up this early in the morning. My granny tried to wake me up during my exams, but no way...I woke up but slept behind my books...hahaha...Well it was for my loving husband whom I got to pick up early morning from the airport. I finally got ready within half an hour and stood near the door waiting for the driver to come. He was late…  We rushed to the air port, my eyes were searching for him with excitement. Slapped, kicked, and abused – Where’s women's empowerment on TV gone?

Women are slapped, kicked, abused and raped in popular shows like 'Naa Aana Iss Des Laado', 'Balika Vadhu' and 'Pratigya' that reach over 130 million households in India and they seem to be doing little to empower women. These supposedly socially relevant shows started as attempts to break away from the chestnut of kitchen politics and tackle themes like female infanticide, child marriage and discrimination. But soon they turned out to be half-hearted efforts, showing violence towards women rather than creating awareness against such atrocities. Of late, these shows have been depicting scenes where a husband physically abuses his wife only because she stands up against him, or in another show, the husband slaps his wife hard for arguing with him. How these shows talk about women's empowerment then, many viewers ask.
